Geographical Center of Europe Marker in Kruhlyi, Ukraine

While the title of “Geographical Center of Europe” is claimed by several countries, this monument near Dilove, Ukraine, holds a unique and historically significant claim. In 1887, Austro-Hungarian geographers, using what was then considered state-of-the-art technology, determined this spot to be the continent’s exact midpoint. To commemorate their finding, they erected a two-meter concrete obelisk with a Latin inscription that, translated, reads: “Permanent, exact, eternal place. Very precisely, with a special device… the Center of Europe is determined here. 1887.”

Located on the banks of the Tisza River in the Carpathian Mountains, the site is now a popular tourist stop, featuring a modern monument and a park-like setting. The peaceful, scenic location offers a charming blend of nature, history, and a touch of continental bragging rights. It’s a perfect spot for a photo op and to ponder the ever-changing and often-disputed borders of a continent.
